La Rochelle

If you are planning a trip to the west of France this year, La Rochelle should be a must on your itinerary.

This town of medieval origin offers you some really charming places, such as its harbour, whose entrance is flanked by medieval towers, but also in its surroundings, places as heavenly as the island of Ré.

The city oozes history in every corner: La Rochelle, which began as a small fishing village in the 10th century, became a strategic point for maritime trade between France and England over the next two centuries, based on wine and salt.

La Rochelle has also become France's gateway to Canada, as well as the gateway to trade with the Nordic countries: the Nordic-style houses on the harbour, in which the city's tourist office is located, are a good example.
