Saint-Palais-de-Phiolin (17) : Doussoux-Baillif cognac stands out in London

The Doussoux-Baillif XO single cask cognac, produced in a limited edition, was awarded the title of best cognac in the world for the first time in London.

"London is a platform in the world of spirits, it is one of the international competitions which also concerns whisky, gin, tequila...", explains Joachim Baillif. On Thursday 20 May 2020, the cognac produced by his father Jean-Marie was named "World's best cognac", in other words the best cognac in the world, at the World Cognac Awards. It is an XO single cask cognac produced in a limited edition. "It's a raw cask cognac, in barrels for 30 years, and we have released 540 bottles", says Jean-Marie. This exceptional product, which was also awarded the gold medal in London, is produced in our little hamlet, only 150 meters away from our home.

Already awarded the title of "Best cognac in the world" in 2020, Domaine du Chêne cognac wins a new gold medal

The Domaine du Chêne, located in Saint-Palais- de-Phiolin, has once again won gold at the International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) in June 2022.

It is hard to imagine, when you take the road to the Chêne, just outside Saint-Palais-de-Phiolin, that this is where the best cognac in the world is made according to the jury of the International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC). While Jean-Marie Baillif, who became Jean Doussoux's partner in 1993, his son-in-law and cellar master Franck and his children, work between the vines and distillation in the calm and silence of the Saintonge countryside, a jury meeting in London has, for the second time in the history of the company, awarded a gold medal to Doussoux-Baillif cognac. "We send three bottles to London, which are tasted blind by specialists, professionals in the spirits industry", says Jean-Marie Baillif, owner of the estate.

The International Wine & Spirit Competition is an annual wine and spirits competition founded in 1969 by the German-British oenologist Anton Massel. Each year, the competition receives entries from over 90 countries around the world. The prizes awarded by the competition are considered high distinctions in the industry. The event takes place every year in November in London.

The evaluation process consists of a blind tasting and a debate. Entries are judged by panels of 250 experts from around the world. Many are masters of wine, some are winemakers or distillers, others are trade specialists, each judging in their particular field. All judges attend an induction course at the IWSC.

The competition has its own purpose-built facilities, including temperature-controlled cellars, tasting rooms and regular staff. In 2019, the IWSC wine judging moved to London for the first time. The competition has its own storage facilities and cellars for over 30,000 bottles.

It takes more than six months to judge all the products as they are sorted into over 1,500 categories. The competition culminates in London in November with the annual awards ceremony and banquet at the Guildhall in the City of London.

Brief history of the best cognac in the world

Creator of spirits for more than 150 years, the Domaine du Chêne is a family business founded in 1865 by Jean Baptiste Doussoux.

The story begins in 1865 when Jean-Baptiste Doussoux bought his first still, determined to distill his wines and raise his Cognac brandies in order to control their quality and authenticity.

The distillation, somewhat abandoned during the war, is restarted by Jean Doussoux, heir of the Domaine, in 1946. The first Pineau des Charentes was produced in 1947.

In 1993, Jean Doussoux and Jean-Marie Baillif joined forces and created the brand name "Domaine du Chêne" as we know it today. They also developed the vineyard and diversified the already very rich grape varieties. The vineyard includes a little more than 90 hectares.

Jean-Marie Baillif and his team master today the whole of their production. From the work of the vine to the aging in our cellars, through the vinification and the distillation, they master the whole process to ensure you unique and quality products.

Over the generations, Jean-Marie Baillif works today with his children to perpetuate the history and know-how of the Domaine du Chêne.
