The Tower of Beaumont

Distance : 14 km/19 minutes by car

Short hike / large space / viewpoint

If the weather is grey or if you want to make an outing close to the gite, and you want to make a small hike, with a beautiful view and a large space you can discover the Tower of Beaumont.

Among the landscapes that border the Gironde estuary, we find the Beaumont burrow, overlooking the small road that leaves Port-Maubert and arrives at La Rive, the port of Mortagne-sur-Gironde.

At the top of this burrow, is built the Beaumont tower, a lantern in the shape of a sugar loaf which, visible from far away, arouses curiosity. For the sailors, it is a bitter on the estuary, a fire tower as one also sees in Roussillon, intended to send signals of fire or smoke to guide them in their navigation towards one of the ports of the right bank.

Rabelais quotes it as being due to "a heap of stones and earth that fell from the deck of Gargamelle, mother of Gargantua, while she was about to build a bridge over the Gironde". In fact, this lantern was built in the 19th century, precisely in 1875, but probably on the site of an old tower.

It offers an unobstructed view of the estuary, the marshes and the fishermen's tons: it is a place to include in your walking projects.
